The North London Fibroid Clinic

Specialist team of Doctors devoted to treating fibroids with minimally invasive therapy

What are fibroids?

Fibroids, also known as uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size, from as small as a pea to as large as a grapefruit. Fibroids are very common, with up to 70-80% of women developing them by the age of 50. While many women with fibroids do not experience any symptoms, others may experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, or difficulty emptying the bladder.

The exact cause of fibroids is unknown, but they are thought to be related to hormonal changes in the body. Treatment options for fibroids include medication, surgery and minimally invasive image guided surgery such as uterine fibroid embolization depending on the size and severity of the fibroids.

Our services

Clinic Consultations

The patient journey begins with an initial clinical consultation at one of our clinic locations. The consultation is an important step in the Uterine Fibroid Embolization process (UFE). During the consultation we will establish the suitability of Uterine Fibroid Embolization by taking a thorough clinical history and reviewing relevant imaging. MRI is usually used to evaluate the size and location of the uterine fibroids and we will arrange for this to be done if required. We take the time to listen to our patients’ concerns, answer questions, and provide detailed information about the UFE procedure, its benefits, risks, and potential outcomes. Our goal is to ensure that our patients feel fully informed to make the best decision for their individual needs and preferences.

Fibroid Embolization

Fibroid embolisation, also known as uterine artery embolisation or uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat uterine fibroids. The procedure involves threading a small catheter through a tiny incision in the groin and guiding it to the arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. Once the catheter is in place, small particles are injected to block blood flow to the fibroids, causing the fibroids to shrink. The procedure is usually performed under sedation & local anesthesia and typically takes 1-2 hours. UFE is a safe and effective treatment option for women who suffer from symptomatic fibroids, including heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and discomfort. The benefits of UFE include a shorter recovery time compared to surgery, preservation of the uterus, and minimal scarring. Most women experience significant relief from symptoms within a few weeks to a few months after the procedure.

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is an essential component of the Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) process, allowing our doctors to evaluate the size, location, and number of fibroids in the uterus. At our clinic locations we offer a range of imaging modalities, including ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans, to provide a comprehensive evaluation of each patient’s fibroids. Our team of skilled imaging technologists and radiologists work closely with our UFE team to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of imaging studies. We are committed to patient safety and comfort, and we strive to make the imaging experience as stress-free as possible for our patients. Our radiologists are experts in interpreting imaging studies related to fibroids, and they use this information to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Our goal is to provide accurate and timely diagnoses providing our patients with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
